Caste system is a hangover from the past. There are 2 factors that contributed to its longevity in India. The first is that at a time the world came out of the dark ages (signified by witch hunting and the Spanish inquisition in Europe), India was under foreign occupation, under rulers who found it suitable to make the divide deeper. Thereafter, the ugly word 'reservation' made sure ruts won't be erased in a hurry. To those who talk about the influenze of Christianity on Saivism, may I ask if they know of the influenze of Budhism on Christ? May I also ask how a faith from Semetic origins adopted the symbolism of lamps, rosaries, washing of the feet, and avoiding meat during fasts? The only way it can influenze natives of India is by its reductionist philosophy, uni-dimentional view of the world and the accent on the sufferings of Christ, backed by belligerent and insidious evangelism.
