The Creamy Layer

feedback    23-AUG-06
So far, there seemed consensus on it. From Supreme Court to those who spoke out in favour of reservations, almost everyone unanimously had maintained so far that the 'creamy-layer' should be excluded from the reservation privileges which should only be for the deserving. But politics seems to have triumphed. For now. The draft bill apparently approved by the government does not exclude the "creamy layer". What do you think?

>>>Why should people like our health minister whose father is a doctor be given the benefit of reservation?>>

Is there any guarantee that they are not discriminated? Can a Dalit IAS officer enter Puri temple or dine with pujari's?

So how will reservation in educational institutes help this Dalit IAS officer enter the temple or dining with Pujari ? Lot of those who are described OBCs are the worst perpetrators of injustice to the really opressed classes. If you want equality the actually backward classes (excluding the creamy layer) should be given the benefit.

Since sapr33333 whoever he/she is chose not to reply to my post, this could be the time to eloborate a little. Among the pro-reservationists (To clarify - I believe in reservation but not reservation ALONE), there seems to be some confusion

1. Some want the educationally backward communities (more importantly people) to be give a chance to gain formal education and therefore improve their quality of life - I fully support them

2. Some want reservation for themselves (mainly the creamy layer among the OBCs) and keep this always with them. They are not bothered about development of the underprivileged. These are just selfish and have the biggest support base from politicians. These are the worst enemies of this country. 3. Some are just anti-brahmin and want revenge. This is ....Full Message

Ganesg>>>All we should want is the nation and ALL its people to be developed and improve their standard of living. >>>

This is exactly what the purpose of Reservation.. A fairer representation in all social scenario's like education(not just primary education), job..

Do you know that, in South Africa, even Govt. contracts are awarded to the oppressed people, though their bid is high..Affirmative action..

Dear sapr3333, we seem to completely agree on 'affirmative action'. Then why is the reluctance of the 'creamy layer' to give way to their own brethen, who have been less previlaged ? I am no opponent of reservation itself. I am actually asking for more, go to grass roots level, people like you who are rightly worried about the opressed should come forward and do something more affirmative. The creamy layer infact should put their efforts in trying to pull the educationally backward up. Look around you in restaurants and cycle shops and the like, child labour is rampant. Is this reservation reaching them ? Shouldn't our effort be to get them educated initially, provide financial assistance if required then give them the benefit of reservation and pull them out of this life, this would be ....Full Message

A Correction to my previous post

"Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe is doing something like this, Idi Amin also implemented similar policies."

should read

"Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe is doing something like this, Idi Amin also implemented similar policies and see how disastrous they have been"

Had we said this 40 years ago, I would have welcomed this. If your statement came out of heart, Im sure we wouldnt have seen AIIMS shut down in the name of youth for equality. It hasnt come from the people as a voluntary effort, as the true meaning of Affirmative Action says..

Today, you are compelled to agree on this, after 50 long years of debate, in the name of Democracy. Im sure the same democracy will continue to extend the reservation in Private Sector too. Oppressors will always oppose, but then finally has to bow down to the democratic verdict.

Dear sapr33333, unfortunately I have to totally disgaree to what you say. Since you have no word on the exclusion of creamy layer, which is the topic of this dicsussion, I suspect you fall into the category of the creamy layer itself who don't want to let go or those who want revenge, and find the easiest target. Either is not good. You still haven't answered a single question I posed, but like a seasoned politician choose to evade the main topic.

To answer you direct, I am neither compelled to agree with this nor do I think it will go into private sector. People in the OBC who run big businesses (creamy layer ??) would be the first to object, woudn't they ? .

I am sure people like me, who are willing to be reasonable will look at your attitude and turn against - not that ....Full Message

India- Always being ruled by some people and to be honest lets realise that we dnt have nytihng except the natural beauty that to thanks to god and no one else. We only have the population which we cannot make use of it. This reservation system was made to promote equality in sc/st/obc but now i dnt think that people like them, infact as it says- History repeats itself, people have started hating them again as before coz of this fact. I too hate these a**h*les. Bloody hell just because of this people like us have to seek our jobs outside India and when we come back then all the mother fuckers say that why dnt work in India. This fucking country has kicked its destiny it self so now there is no use of discussing all this bull shit. i dnt think any1 of is interested in country now, if some1 ....Full Message

"Creamy Layer"is not a term or concept of Constitution of India but envisaged by The Supreme Court,in the judgement the order for job reservation as per Mandal Commission was upheld after a fierce judicial review. It should have been discussed and passed in Parliament, the supreme democratic institution, also.when VP Singh Govt implimented Mandal report for reservation in Union Govt's jobs, the oft repeated arguement against was that it would have been better if reservation was first implimented in education. Now, when it is being implimented in education, the "creamy layer"provision should be dispensed with, and if Union Govt bill is in this direction it is certainly "welcome". SURAJ YADAV. Sr Lecturer,SSN
