Elizabeth Debicki, who played Princess Diana in 'The Crown,' believes that the show's decision of not showing her car crash or death was out of respect.
Elizabeth Debicki's portrayal of Princess Diana in Season 5 and 6 of Netflix's 'The Crown' has been applauded. In an interview with The New York Times, the actress revealed that she never really auditioned for the role. While Emma Corrin played the young Diana in Season 4, creator Peter Morgan had Elizabeth in mind for the character's later years.
In the interview with The New York Times, Elizabeth Debicki said that her agent mentioned the possibility of the show considering her for Diana in the future. But she didn't believe it. Morgan insisted, "She was only ever in a group of one for me. If she had turned us down, I’d have had no option but to write the show differently." To prepare for the role, she read about the princess, perfected her dialect, and mastered her gait. She also expressed that portraying Diana allowed her to deepen her love and affection towards people around her.
The actress also agreed with the show's decision to not go ahead with showcasing Diana's death or the unfortunate car crash. "I don’t think it’s at all necessary. You must proceed with enormous respect and caution because this was a real person and a profound and horrific tragedy," she said.
'The Crown' Season 6 has been split into two parts. Part 1 focuses on Princess Diana’s life following her divorce from Prince Charles up until her death in 1997. The upcoming Part 2, set to release on Netflix on December 14, will follow Prince William as he begins higher education at University, where he meets Kate Middleton, his future wife and the next Princess of Wales.
