'A Fantastic Woman' Wins Oscar For Best Foreign Film

Chile's "A Fantastic Woman" today took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film trumping front-runner "The Square" from Sweden.

Director Sebastian Lelio accepted the award, along with the female lead of the film, transgender star Daniela Vega, whom he lauded for her critically-acclaimed performance in the movie.

In his acceptance speech, Lelio thanked a"lifetime of friends, artistes".

"I share this with you all," he added.

The plot follows Vega's Marina, who grieves the death of her love, Orlando, who is about 30 years older than her. After his death is investigated, it comes to be known that she is a transgender woman and is shunned by her lover's family because of her gender identity.

How Marina grapples with the situation at hand and becomes a woman in a tumultuous journey is the story of the film.

Other nominees in the category was "The Insult" (Lebanon), "Loveless" (Russia), "On Body and Soul" (Hungary) and "The Square" (Sweden).
