Ahead of its release on Netflix, 'Animal' has landed in legal trouble. T-Series has been dragged to court by one of the co-producers for a breach of agreement.
Ever since its release, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’ has been marred in controversies. The Ranbir Kapoor starrer earned big at the box office, but the violence and sexist scenes have not boded well with many. Despite these developments, the movie was set to release on Netflix on January 26. But the film has now found itself in a legal tangle.
Cine 1 Studios, the co-producer of ‘Animal’, has approached the Delhi High Court and has sought a stay on the release of the film on the OTT giant. The production house has alleged that there was a breach of the agreement. They said that they have received no payment as of this date. PTI reported that Cine 1 Studios had filed a complaint against T-Series.
As reported by PTI, senior advocate Sandeep Sethi who was representing Cine 1 Studios said, “They (Super Cassettes) have been collecting all the money but I have not been paid a single penny... I have a long relationship with them but they have no respect for the agreement. I had the regard for the relationship and the sanctity of the contract, therefore, I did not rush to court.”
The complainant added that they did not receive any information about the revenue made by the film, the box office collections, music, satellite, or internet rights. They claimed that T-Series did not fulfill obligations concerning the intellectual property rights of the film.
Representing T-Series, senior advocate Amit Sibal revealed that Cine 1 had invested no money in ‘Animal’ and all the expenses were borne by Super Cassettes. He mentioned that originally Cine 1 was entitled to a 35 percent share in profits and was entitled to 35 percent intellectual property rights. However, they had signed a document where they gave up on all intellectual property rights. Amit Sibal said, “In the amended agreement, he (Cine 1) has deleted the clause where he got 35 percent of intellectual property right in the film.... All this has been given up for consideration of ₹ 2.6 crore for which he raised an invoice.”
