Chitra Vakil Sharma says that the LGBTQIA+ community has gained a lot more acceptance today, than what it had before. She says that films and web series depicting the community have a lot to do with this progress.
“There has been a noticeable increase in awareness and acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community over time. Society has undergone a remarkable transformation, with greater recognition of the challenges faced by this community and growing empathy for their rights and equality. Increased visibility in media and everyday life has played a crucial role in fostering understanding and acceptance. People from all walks of life, including the younger generation, are embracing the LGBTQIA+ community, leading to a more inclusive future,” she says.
She adds, “Representation plays a crucial role in shaping societal perceptions and attitudes. Movies and media, such as 'Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga', 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan', and many others, have started portraying same-sex relationships more prominently and sensitively. By showcasing diverse love stories and highlighting the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, these films contribute to a broader understanding and acceptance of gay rights. They help dispel stereotypes, challenge prejudices, and create meaningful conversations, fostering a more inclusive society.”
She adds that we need to understand that this community needs inclusion. “It is essential for our society, including the conservative sections, to be more accepting of LGBTQIA+ individuals. The global shift towards acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights highlights the progress made in understanding and recognizing the equal rights and dignity of all individuals, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity. By embracing diversity and inclusivity, we can create a society that respects the rights and freedoms of everyone, promoting social harmony and equality for all,” he says.
Talking about the ongoing Pride month, she says, “Pride month indeed serves as a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and recognise the LGBTQ+ community. It is heartening to witness the increased awareness and acceptance among teenagers and society as a whole. The younger generation is often at the forefront of embracing diversity, advocating for equality, and challenging outdated norms. This growing awareness not only ensures a more inclusive future but also paves the way for open conversations and understanding. It is inspiring to witness the progress made, and we should continue to support and amplify these positive changes, nurturing a more accepting society for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” she says.
