'Padmavat' Will Not Be Released In Gujarat: CM Vijay Rupani

This comes days after his Rajasthan counterpart Vasundhara Raje announced the same.

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani on Frday said Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial film 'Padmavat' will be not released in the state, days after his Rajasthan counterpart Vasundhara Raje announced the same.

Other states, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, which had indicated that the film will not be allowed to be released in November -- are yet to announce their final decisions.

The film, mired in controversy over its plot line, has been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has asked its makers to change the title and suggested other modifications.

Though Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Bhansali have not released an official statement yet, sources in the production house said the film will release on January 25, a day before Republic Day.

The period romance that features Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in lead roles was earlier scheduled to be released on December 1.

"Rani Padmini is our self-respect and we will not let it hurt in any case. Directions in this regard have been given to Rajasthan Home minister," she had said.

Meanwhile, more than 100 Shri Rajput Karni Sena workers were detained on Friday for protesting outside the CBFC office in Mumbai in connection with the release of 'Padmavat'.

The protesters said changing the name of the film from 'Padmavati' to Padmavat was not enough.

"The police are detaining us without any reason. We are not here for any type of rebellious activity, we just wanted to talk to the CBFC and tell them that Padmavat film violates the Indian history and request them to not release it," Prakash Singh Parmar, a Karni Sena worker, told ANI.

He added that the Sena was requesting the censor body that they should not do anything which in turn would hurt anyone's cultural beliefs.

"Therefore, we all came here to have a discussion but they have detained us. They have changed the name of the film but that does not change anything," Parmar stated.

Another Sena worker, Ganpat Singh said the film should be banned completely.
