Ram Gopal Varma Takes A Dig At Indians As He Reacts To 'Oppenheimer's Bhagavad Gita Controversy

Christopher Nolan’s film 'Oppenheimer' released in theatres worldwide on July 21. It is about American nuclear scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer,  'the father of the atomic bomb'. Cillian Murphy played the titular role. The movie got a positive response from critics and the audience and also opened with good numbers at the box office. However, a particular scene in the movie angered a section of Indian movie-goers as there was a reference to the Bhagavad Gita during an intimate scene. They accused Nolan of hurting the religious sentiments of the country. 

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has now spoken about the Bhagavad Gita controversy in a tweet. Reacting to the controversy, the 'Satya' director tweeted, “Irony is that an American nuclear scientist Oppenheimer read the Bhagwad Geeta which I doubt even 0.0000001 % of Indians read.”

For the unversed, in 'Oppenheimer' there was a scene where the protagonist Cillian Murphy who played J. Robert Oppenheimer was seen invoking a verse from Bhagavad Gita after an intimate scene with his girlfriend Jean Tatlock (played by Florence Pugh).

Meanwhile, as per news agency ANI, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has demanded "absolute accountability" from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in response to the objectionable scene in the film. 

He has also asked the filmmakers to promptly remove the controversial scene from 'Oppenheimer'. He has warned that stringent action will be taken against all CBFC members involved in approving the screening of the movie.
