On Tuesday, the Narcotics Control Bureau informed the Supreme Court that they will not challenge the bail granted to Rhea Chakraborty in a drugs case.
In 2020, after the demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) charged actress Rhea Chakraborty under Section 27-A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act that pertains to “financing and harbouring illegal drug trafficking”.
It was in connection with a drugs-related probe linked to Sushant's (who was Rhea's boyfriend then) death. Rhea was granted bail by the Bombay High Court in October 2020. Her bail application was allowed by the High Court subject to furnishing a PR Bond of Rs. 1 lakh, including other conditions. As per a bail condition, she was also restricted from leaving the country. The centre then filed a petition against the Bombay High Court order of granting bail to the actress.
As per a report in Bar And Bench, on Tuesday, the Central government told the Supreme Court that it will not challenge the bail granted to Rhea Chakraborty by the Bombay High Court in the cases registered against her under NDPS. So, it's a great relief for Chakraborty.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju told a bench of Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh, "We are not challenging the grant of bail but on the interpretation of section, please keep it open for consideration. Let the order not a precedent also".
For the unversed, Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his apartment in Bandra, Mumbai on June 14, 2020. Later, the 'Kedarnath' actor's parents registered a case against Rhea alleging abetment to suicide. A parallel investigation into alleged drug procurement by her also started by the NCB on the basis of her WhatsApp chats.
