Sandeep Singh 'Feels Sad' As His Film 'Safed' Banned In Certain Countries

Producer Sandeep Singh made his debut as director with 'Safed'. The film which premiered on Zee5 today, on December 29 shows the love story of a widow (Meera Chopra) and a transgender (Abhay Verma). 'Safed' has reportedly triggered a controversy in certain conservative countries and the authorities have called for a ban on streaming of the film as per their LGBTQ guidelines.

'Safed' has got mixed reviews from audiences and critics. Sandeep Singh has reacted to the controversy as he said, "I feel sad when my film, which is showing reality and giving voice to a certain section of people ignored by society, is being suppressed just because you have the power. Let the common people decide what they want to watch and not watch. Safed is a beautiful love story simply told. I don't know why it's been banned in certain countries."

In an interview with Outlook India, Sandeep revealed why he chose such a sensitive subject to make his directorial debut. He said, ''I chose this because I knew that nobody would choose these kinds of subjects, actors or characters. Because in Bollywood, people are only looking for stars, projects or films which will do well at the box office and give them money. As a producer, I have never looked at the box office. Yes, that only defines success in businessmen's minds but filmmakers like me are very sure what stories should be told through cinema which is the biggest medium to convey the message. Through my films, I want the youth to realise what kind of good things they can take if they watch and follow the right path. Through Safed I want to make sure that people do not call transgenders 'third gender'. Please don't do that.''

He added, ''I requested the Supreme Court and begged them that if a country like Nepal has given equal rights, it's time for India to stand by them and give them the right to live and be happy with their choices and sexuality''.
