Suchitra Krishnamoorthi highlights the idea behind the song, and talks about how she feels on bouncing back as a singer again.
Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, who is an actress, singer, writer and painter, is all set to hit the popularity charts once again, with the release of her new single, titled ‘Shararat’. The track, which was released today on the occasion of World Music Day, is produced by Suchitra herself.
With the release of her new single, she is back to the music scene after a hiatus of 5 years, and the lyrics of the song question the traditional notions of the male-female dynamic and romance. In an exclusive interview with Gurpreet Kaur of Outlook India, she highlights the idea behind the song, and talks about how she feels on bouncing back as a singer again. Excerpts from the interview:
1. Tell us more about your new single ‘Shararat’, and the idea behind it…
I have been curious about and keen to explore different interpretations of love. The traditional notions of love and romance are quite lopsided. For a woman, to hold her own individuality, which often conflicts with notions we are bred on, and yet convey passion and intensity was the attempt. To give all of yourself to love completely but yet to not lose yourself completely.
2. The song has been composed by Sunita Nagarajan with lyrics by Mayur Puri. How was it to work with them?
Sunita Nagarajan is a highly accomplished singer and composer who I have looked up to musically my entire life. She is my elder sister, she sang this melody to me casually at a family dinner and I immediately fell in love with it and decided to record it immediately. As for Mayur Puri, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to him by my friend and music mentor Atul Churamani. He is brilliant, and immediately understood what I was trying to express and sent me these amazing lyrics to match the melody. People have asked me if the lyrics are by Ghalib or Faiz, and when I tell them these are original lyrics by Mayur Puri, they are surprised
3. You are bouncing back to music after a gap. How do you feel? Are you looking to explore singing more now?
Yes. I am doing 2 pieces of musical theatre and also will be touring soon with my band for my solo and group musical concerts. I am super excited. I had lost my confidence as a singer and had lost my voice completely in the past - it's finally coming back and I feel on top of the world
4. Why is the title of the track, ‘Shararat’? Tell us more..
‘Shararat’. Playfulness. It's my philosophy towards life itself. Don't take anything too seriously and don't ever lose your sense of wonder and mischief.
5. You have been an actress, model and singer, apart from being a theatre artist and a painter. With so much on your plate, what do you love doing the most?
I love it all really. They are all parts of me - but I guess music is my core competence. Those from my childhood remember me as the girl who always sang on stage, it was expected that I would take up singing as a profession. Nobody expected me to become an actress, not even me. That just happened
6. What other projects are you looking at now?
Live concerts are my focus now. And I hope someone offers me some nice meaty roles on screen or OTT. In the meantime, ‘Margaon the Closed File’, in which I play the role of Samantha, should be out soon. Co starring Zeenat Aman, Pallavi Joshi, it's a super exciting project. And yes I have sung many songs in this project including the title track. Happy days are here again.
For the unversed, Suchitra began her acting career with the TV series ‘Chunauti’ and made her breakthrough in films in 1994, with ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’. She is also gaining popularity on OTTplatforms where she has appeared on interesting shows.
