- Design will be a cross between a swoopy fastback and a typical SUV.
The flagship will be based on the Imagine concept that was showcased at the recently held Geneva Motor Show.
Kia’s all-electric Imagine Concept, which was displayed at the recently held 2019 Geneva Motor Show, will soon enter production. Speaking to Auto Express, Kia’s chief executive designer Luc Donkerwolke confirmed the news and said that the all-electric vehicle will be the first SUV coupe from the Korean giant. He also mentioned that the conversion of a concept to a production-spec model will take three years, which hints that the production version of the Imagine concept could hit the roads by 2022.
Coming to the design, the all-electric SUV coupe will take plenty of elements from the swoopy and stylish Kia Stinger and the Optima sedan. Based on the concept shown in the Geneva Motor Show, we expect Kia to go all out and retain the connected head lamps and the suicide style doors. The suicide style doors also reveal the concept’s interior. While the Imagine concept showcased a synchronised 21 screens in the entire dashboard, the more realistic production version is expected to feature two massive connected horizontal screens a la the current-gen Mercedes S-Class.
The new SUV coupe will be underpinned by a new electric platform which will debut in 2020. While the carmaker is tight lipped regarding the powertrain specifications, it is being said that it will share this platform with Hyundai for future products.
While Kia might launch the upcoming all-electric SUV coupe by 2022 in international markets, it is unlikely that it would be launched in India anytime soon. Though Kia is already developing an all-electric platform for India, so far the carmaker has been tight-lipped about the launch of the first EV in India. Kia will start operations in India this year and the first product to hit the market will be the SP2i-based compact SUV.
