Nissan Sylphy EV Launched In China; Will It Come To India?

The Sylphy is Nissan’s first EV for China and shares its powertrain with the Leaf EV

As we await the launch of affordable EVs with acceptable travel range in India, China has received yet another electric vehicle, the Nissan Sylphy Zero Emission. It is priced at CNY 1,66,000 (Rs 17.11 lakh) and can cover 338km on a single charge as per the Chinese-cycle.

The new electric car borrows its name from the Nissan Sylphy sedan but shares its powertrain with the Leaf EV. Nissan has developed the Sylphy with its Chinese partner, the Dongfeng Motor group to fend off competition from more affordable rivals like the BYD Auto.

Let’s take a look at the specifications of the Nissan Sylphy

Now, Nissan’s plans of introducing an EV in India are already in the public domain. In fact, the carmaker has also announced that it’s going to bring the Leaf EV to our shores. But, it will only be coming to India as a completely built-up unit (CBU) which would in turn result in a price of nearly Rs 30 to 40 lakh. If Nissan can localise the Sylphy Zero Emission for India, it can have a relatively affordable EV and the first-mover advantage in the EV segment in India. That said, it seems very unlikely right now.

Nissan’s alliance partner, Renault is also planning to commence the sales of the Kwid EV in China which is also expected to reach the Indian market if circumstances permit. More recently, we also reported that the carmaker is also planning to localise the manufacturing of an electric vehicle by sourcing electric motors and transmission units from a Gurugram-based component company.

The alliance shares several of its platforms and with the Nissan Leaf already confirmed for India, it is quite possible to see the Sylphy to reach our shores as well.
