But saccharine romance apart, The Twentieth Wife is a profoundly imaginative exploration of what life must have been like behind harem walls. Not very different, it turns out, from women’s life of any age: the subtle and not-so-subtle ways of wresting and wielding power through men and over them, and the eternal fascination that power itself always holds for both men and women.
