Footnotes and appendices are often more avidly read than the book itself. Yet publishers and authors farm them out to research assistants so green behind the ears that their idea of research is Google. The result: some unintended hilarity. A TLS review is scathing on this front, targeting noted historian Mushirul Hasan's Westward Bound—Travels of Mirza Abu Taleb and his publisher Oxford University Press for their howlers and advising OUP to pulp the book "to avoid being a laughing stock for longer than necessary".
