Naina Lal Kidwai

The country head of HSBC India and former FICCI president, on her new book 30 Women in Power: Their Voices, Their Stories

Tell us about the book.

It’s a compilation of voices of Indian women. Each essay is united by common themes; certain key values are integral to all success stories.

Why ‘30 Indian Women in Power’?

I wanted to do something for women in India. Also, I was often asked about the status of our women by foreign CEOs and officials.

You say that ‘ambition’ in women should no longer be seen as a bad thing. What role did ambition play in your successful career?

I was fortunate that I was given the opportunity and was eager to prove that I could deliver.

You talk about the importance of a supportive family too.

Support from those around you helps develop confidence and ensures success.

Most women face gender bias. Do you think the book ignores that section?

Not at all. The stories of outstanding women are told with the aim to, hopefully, spur change in perception about women.

How is the response to the book?

Phenomenal. It is encouraging to receive such response from both men and women.

Have you felt intimidated being a part of a sector often considered male-dominated?

Never. Being the only woman in the room and holding your ground makes one confident.

You recently said that the government should hold more meetings with Indian CEOs....

I believe that meeting with CEOs is important to restart the investment cycle.

You are an inspiration for thousands of young girls, any advice for them?

If you are passionate and are willing to take risks and face challenges, then even the most unrealistic dreams can come true.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

I work with NGOs on women’s empowerment. I enjoy short vacations with my family.
