Even so, Vijayan’s book is a watershed in Malayalam literature, which is literallydivided into two periods, pre-Khasak and post-Khasak. Shrugging off allexisting genres, the storytelling in Khasak is marked by sheer lyricism and aclassic quality of timelessness. It has spawned legions of imitators but no equals. Amonghis other novels is Dharmapuranam (Saga of Dharmapuri) a scatalogical and darksatire on the political system, which outraged conservatives. He has also been a famouslysubversive and cerebral cartoonist.
Though ailing, Vijayan is currently working on Thalamurangal (Generations)which many feel will be his most important work in two decades.
