Perhaps the reason for the emergence of the academic as media 'star'—whether it is Samuel Huntington and his controversial thesis on the Clash Of Civilisations or Edward Said's celebrated work, Orientalism —lies in the fact that the world is moving so fast that we need grey eminences to provide defining theses that tell us exactly what is going on and what is likely to happen.
