The bulk of the army was paralysed as instructions went out to divide units on communal lines. Before the week ended, Mountbatten suffered his biggest personal reverse at the hands of Jinnah. And as referendum neared in the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP), the Afghan government supported Pakhtun independence and claimed the territory.
