Suzuki may initiate a patch-up with the Indian government
IS the ice finally melting between the Indian government and Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) over the Maruti issue? Even as the Suzuki supremos came out harshly last fortnight in Tokyo against the stand taken by the Indian government, there is talk of a fresh initiative by Suzuki to effect a compromise and solve the imbroglio amicably.
While no confirmation was available from either side, sources in MUL say that Suzuki Motors, after its adamant stance over the issue, is ready to cooperate and arrive at a mutually accepted decision with the Indian government over the appointment of MUL's managing director as well as the chairman.
An indication was available at the launch of the remodelled Esteem when the Japanese nominees on MUL's board took active part in answering questions from the media—a job hitherto dominated by their Indian counterparts in the company. SMC, sources said, had ruled out withdrawing from the venture and was willing to cooperate in the best interests of the company.
With both sides holding firm to their stands so far and the London arbitration verdict barely a few weeks away, it might just be in the best interests of the company that the two sides make it up between themselves.
