What has contributed to the phenomenal growth in trade between the two countries?

It is a direct result of the broad and extraordinary relations that exist between the two countries. Both countries have a long history of contact and share a strong bond. Mahatma Gandhi left us a heritage which is treasured. Besides, President Nelson Mandela is emotionally attached to India. The success of Indo-South African trade is symbolic of South-South cooperation.

The South African Trade Minister is coming in November with over 40 businessmen, of whom 15-20 are looking to gain from India’s experience in the small-scale sector. India can provide technical training and simple technology to our people. This will give them the skill to start small-scale enterprises and even have joint ventures with Indian companies at a later date.

How can India avail of South Africa’s excellent geographical position?

India’s exports to South America are currently routed through Europe. If shipping links are established via South Africa, it can reduce freight costs by 25 per cent and voyage duration time by 50 per cent. For this we will have to establish better port infrastructure and we are moving towards that. We also have a customs union with four south African countries and India can utilise South Africa to tap those markets.
