NEET 2024 Supreme Court Hearing Highlights: More Facts Needed Before Re-NEET, Says SC; Next Hearing On July 11

"Wee intend to direct NTA to make full disclosure. It can broadly be classified into 3 aspects: (1) nature of leak (2) places where leak took place and (3) lag of time between occurrence of leak and conduct of exam," said CJI Chandrachud while dictating the order.

About 24 lakh students registered for NEET UG exam. About 23,33,297 appeared. Exam was conducted at 4750 centres in 571 cities. Exam was also held in 14 cities overseas.

The top court has called on the Centre, NTA and CBi to submit consolidated reports by Wednesday regarding the paper leaks and what has been done in the case. The SG has requested time till next Thursday.

From the process of setting the papers to the setting of the percentiles for the result, every aspect of the NEET UG exam is under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court.

With the hearing regarding the irregularities in NEET UG underway, the CJI has questioned the progress in the CBI cases and FIrs registered against the accused.

"Are we still in the process of identifying students who were beneficiaries? If we are [...], we will have to cancel the exam. Cancellation of exam of 24 lakh students is a matter of extreme," stated CJI Chandrachud.

"Is it NTA's case that there was no leak? This fact can't be disputed. You don't cancel a whole exam only because 2 students engaged in malpractice. Therefore, we must be careful about the nature of leak," says CJI CHandrachud.

As the hearing continues, CJI Chandrachud has stated that "one thing is clear - leak has taken place. Question is, how widespread is the reach?"

"If students were asked to memorize on morning of the exam, leak might not have been so widespread. If we can't identify candidates who are guilty of wrongdoing, retest has to be ordered. One more imp aspect is modality in which leak took place. If modality is though social media, it is a possibility that leak is wide," stated CJI.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice has questioned the method in which the papers for the NEET UG exam are set and sent to the exam centres.

A total of 24 lakh students appeared for the NEET UG 2024 exam held on May 5.

The NEET UG 2024 exam was held on May 5 for 24 lakh students across and outside India. The exam, conducted by NTA, is held as an entrance exam for admissions into undergraduate medical courses in India.

"So the fact that there was a paper leak is admitted?," asked CJi DY Chandrachud. In response to this, the Solicitor General admitted that a paper leak was admitted at one place.

"The persons are arrested and the beneficiary students were identified...their results withheld," the SG added.

As revealed in the Supreme Court, a total of six FIRs have been registered in Patna, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Jharkhand in relation to the NEET UG paper leak case.

Addressing a bench of CJI CHandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, counsel appearing for the petitioners has raised the issue of a re-test.

Highlight that there were 67 toppers, the counsel stated - "67 candidates scored 720/720 marks, 6 being from the same centre...this is mathematically not possible"

The hearing over the NEET UG exam irregulairties has begun. The bench is listening to the pleas filed for a re-exam first.

The re-exam for 1,500 students was conducted on June 23 and the results for the same was declared on July 1.

Various pleas in the Supreme Court have been filed, demanding a re-examination for all 24 lakh students who appeared for the NEET UG exam on May 5.

The Centre and NTA are opposing the re-exam, stating that the cases of malpractices are "isolated" and a re-exam will not be fair to "honest candidates".

The Supreme Court will hear the pleas shortly and announce its decision regarding the re-exam today.

The matter regarding the irregularities in the NEET UG 2024 exam has been listed before the court. The NEET case has been listed as iteam number 31. The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case shortly.

Amid the delay in the NEET UG Counselling, the National Medical Commission has approved the setting up of 113 new medical colleges. Based on the data available, the maximum number of medical colleges will be set up in Uttar Pradesh.

At the peak of the NTA exam controversy, the National Board of Examination for Medical Sciences postponed the NEET PG exam, 12 hours before the day of the paper.

This postponement came during the row over paper leaks in the NEET UG and UGC NET exams, both conducted by NTA. Weeks after postponing the NEET PG exam for the third time, a fresh date was issued for August 11.

NTA released the results of the NEET Re-Exam on July 1 for the 800 candidates whose grace marks were cancelled. With the revised results, the topper tally came down from 67 to 61 as six of the candidates – whose scored a perfect 720/720 after the first attempt failed to get a perfect score in the retest.

However, as per analysts, the students get high scores of 680 and above.

The Medical Counselling Committee - the main body which conducts the NEET UG Counselling process - is yet to release the detailed counselling schedule for candidates.

Based on a hearing in June in the Supreme Court, it was stated that the counselling process will begin from July 6. However, the schedule is yet to be released. It is expected that MCC will release the dates after the SC hearing today.

The NEET Re-Exam was conducted by the NTA on June 23. This re-examination came after the central testing agency cancelled the results of 1,563 students who received grace marks.

Of the 1500 students, around 800 appeared for the NEET UG re-exam. The results for the same were declared by NTA on June 30.

The students who appeared for the re-exam received fresh results. The students who chose not to appear for the re-exam will go for the counselling process with their June 4 results, but their grace marks will be omitted.

On June 11, a plea in the Supreme Court called for the exam to be re-conducted. Upon hearing the petition, the top court stated that the sanctity of the NEET UG exam had been compromised and called on responses from the Central Government and NTA.

However, after major protests and backlash, NTA told the Supreme Court that it will be cancelling the grace marks of 1,563 students and offer them re-exam.

Various petitions have been filed before the Supreme Court regarding the irregularities in the NEET UG exam held on May 5. Among the 38 petitions, few have been filed for a re-exam of the NEET exam.

However, the Centre and NTA are opposing the re-examination as it would not be fair to the honest candidates who appeared for the entrance exam earlier this year.

The Supreme Court is expected the NEET UG hearing shortly.

The Supreme Court has convened. According to Live Law, a counsel mentioned a petition filed by 56 students from Gujarat opposing the pleas to re-conduct the NEET-UG exam.

CJI asked the counsel to mention the matter when the other NEET-UG matters are taken up.

A 3-judge compising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the petitions related to NEET-UG 2024 shortly.

The Central government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) have filed affidavits before the Court opposing the demand to cancel the exam. They have told the Supreme Court that the instances of alleged malpractices are isolated and do not warrant the scrapping of the entire exam jeopardising the future of lakhs of honest students.

The petitioners have sought a retest contending that the paper leak was widespread affecting the sanctity of the exam.

The pleas regarding the irregularities and request for re-exam of the NEET UG exam have been listed before the bench. As per Live Law, the NEET case has been listed as iteam number 31.

The pleas will be heard by CJI DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra after 10:30 AM.

The CBI has taken over the investigation of cases of alleged malpractices in NEET-UG 2024 Exam. The cases, which were being investigated by Gujarat, Rajasthan and Bihar Police, were handed over to the CBI last month.

CBI has arrested the principal and vice principal of a school in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh and sought a 4-day remand of four of the five persons arrested by Gujarat police in relation to the paper leak. Furthermore, the CBI also arrested two people in Patna.

The Supreme Court hearing for the NEET UG exam is set to begin shortly. As per reports, the hearing is set to begin at 10:30 AM.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear nearly 40 petitions today regarding the irregularities and re-exam of the NEET UG 2024. Amid these please, the Centre and National Testing Agency have filed affidavits opposing the demand to cancel the exam.

• Allegations of irregularities, including paper leaks, triggered protests in several cities and sparring between rival political parties.

• The Centre and the NTA on June 13 told the court that they had cancelled the grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates.

• They were given the option to either take a re-test or forgo the compensatory marks awarded for loss of time.

• The NTA announced the revised rank list on July 1 after issuing the results of the re-test held on June 23.

With the Supreme Court set to hear the pleas regarding the NEET UG 2024 exam, the Medical Counselling Committee has delayed the release of the counselling schedule for NEET UG 2024 candidates.

The counselling dates are expected to be declared once the hearing on NEET UG exam row has concluded.

NEET PG 2024 was postponed 12 hours before the day of the exam. However, NBE has released the new date of the NEET PG exam and is set to be held on August 11.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) is yet to notify of the counselling schedule of NEET UG and PG courses for the year 2024. However, MCC is expected to release the schedule soon, likely after the case in the Supreme Court concludes.

The matter will be heard by a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
