The bye-election in these constituencies was needed due to the resignation, disqualification, or demise of the sitting legislators.
The 12 states in which the bye elections were held are - Bihar, Haryana, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
A bye-election is held in specific constituencies when the sitting legislator has resigned, was disqualified, or died.
Bypolls were held in six constituencies of Himachal Pradesh after the sitting Congress legislators were disqualified on February 29 by the party for cross-voting during Rajya Sabha elections.

Former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar resigned from his cabinet in March 2024 leaving his Assembly Constituency Karnal without a legislator and bypolls were held in the seat this time.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the outgoing MP from Kurukshetra, contested the bypoll to the Karnal assembly seat.
Saini, who is also the state BJP chief, was sworn in as the chief minister on March 12, replacing Khattar. Khattar's resignation as MLA from Karnal had necessitated the by-election.

The assembly secretariat issued a notification regarding his disqualification on February 16, 2024.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad resigned from the membership of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly on January 1, 2024. Ahmad was the MLA from the Gandey constituency and he cited personal reasons for his resignation.
11 candidates including Kalpana Soren, wife of jailed former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, are contesting in the Gandey assembly by-election.

The ruling Trinamool Congress on Friday nominated actor-turned-politician Sayantika Banerjee for the June 1 bypoll to Baranagar assembly seat in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal which fell vacant after former TMC leader Tapas Roy resigned as the MLA before quitting the party.

While BJP's Arjun Modhwadia won Porbandar, its leader CJ Chavda was leading in Vijapur assembly seats Arvind Ladani, Chirag Patel and Dharmendrasinh Vaghela were also ahead of their rivals in Manavadar, Khambat and Vaghodiya seats, respectively.
BJP wins second bypoll assembly seat of the day with Khambat in Gujarat. Chiragkumar Arvindbhai Patel has won the polls with 88457 votes.

Himachal Pradesh's Barasar Assembly seat has been won by BJP candidate Inder Dutt Lakhanpal with 33,086 votes.
BJP candidate Dipak Majumder has won the bypoll from Ramnagar Assembly in Tripura with 25380 votes.
CPI(M) candidate Ratan Das lost the race as he gain 7366 votes.
Congress candidate Sriganesh has won in the bypoll of Telangana's Secunderabad Cantt Assembly seat with 53651 votes.
There were 15 candidates running for this seat including BJP and BRS.
With the win of Congress candidate Vivek Sharma from Kutlehar assembly seat, the incumbent party in the state wins four out of the six seats after the previous MLAs cross voted and got disqualified from the part earlier this year.
