The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance appears set to come back to power for a third consecutive term as votes are counted for the Lok Sabha Election 2024 today, June 4 (Tuesday). The counting of votes is underway for all 543 Lok Sabha seats.
The Lok Sabha Elections 2024 were held over seven phases in April, May and June, with the last phase held on June 1.
Almost all exit polls broadcast on June 1 projected a thumping majority for the incumbent National Democratic Alliance, suggesting a third consecutive term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the trends available so far show a poor showing for the NDA compared to the 2019 results. The incumbent alliance was hoping for 400-plus seats and the BJP was expecting to win over 370 seats. However, that is not going to be the case and the alliance could end with less than 300 seats. For the BJP, it will be a big setback as it might not secure simple majority on its own unlike 2014 and 2019.
The opposition INDIA coalition led by the Congress party was projected by exit polls to win less then 200 seats but the alliance has defied expectations and is ahead on 232 seats.
Post exit polls, NDA had sounded confident about the victory riding on exit polls projections.
INDIA grouping, however, had rejected the exit poll results and said it will win more than 295 seats and form the government.
