The man went on a stabbing spree at Paris' busy Gare du Nord train station on Wednesday at around 6:43 am. One of those stabbed was a police officer.

A man on Wednesday stabbed six persons at a train station in France's capital Paris before being shot and arrested by the French police.

The man went on a stabbing spree at Paris' busy Gare du Nord train station on Wednesday at around 6:43 am. One of those stabbed was a police officer.

The attack has been described as unprovoked and the man has not yet been identified.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told reporters at the scene that the attacker was currently "between life and death" in a hospital.

The officer was stabbed in the back by the attacker, but was saved by a bulletproof vest, Darmanin said. Another one of the other victims was seriously injured in the shoulder blade and taken for emergency treatment.

Darmanin thanked the police "for their effective and courageous reaction".

Video of the Gare du Nord, one of the French capital's busiest commuter stations, showed an eerie calms as dozens of police personnel huddled nearby the Eurostar terminal entrance in areas cordoned off from the public.

No specific motive, including terrorism, has currently been suggested by authorities.

The attack comes less than a month after a gunman shot dead three Kurds, prompting riots in Paris.

The Independent noted, "All three of those who died were Kurdish, a lawyer for the Kurdish cultural centre told Reuters. Three others were also wounded, with one criticially injured and two less seriously hurt. The suspect was wounded in the face. Riot police fired teargas to push back an angry crowd a short distance from the scene of the shootings as projectiles were thrown at officers."
