Greek Authorities Apprehend Two Suspected Arsonists Amidst Devastating Wildfires

While authorities have attributed multiple fires to arsonists, the origins of some of the largest blazes, such as the one in the northeastern Evros region, remain unclear.

Greek authorities have taken action against suspected arsonists amid a series of destructive wildfires that have led to tragic outcomes. Over the weekend, two individuals were apprehended under suspicion of intentionally starting fires as the nation's firefighters confront blazes responsible for a reported 21 deaths.

One arrest took place on the island of Evia, where a man was taken into custody for allegedly igniting flames in the Karystos region. Authorities shared that the individual admitted to initiating four other fires within the vicinity during the months of July and August. A separate apprehension occurred in the Larissa area of central Greece, involving another man suspected of deliberately setting ablaze dried vegetation. Legal authorities have been informed in both cases, AP reported.

While authorities have attributed multiple fires to arsonists, the origins of some of the largest blazes, such as the one in the northeastern Evros region, remain unclear. This particular blaze, which has been linked to the majority of the fire-related deaths, has persisted for over a week. The Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister, Vassilis Kikilias, expressed strong condemnation for the actions of arsonists, characterizing their behavior as not only unacceptable but also criminal.

Minister Kikilias further highlighted the urgency of the situation, citing a series of fires set within a short span of time in the Avlona region. The location, situated in the northern foothills of Mount Parnitha, has witnessed both newly ignited fires and the ongoing battle against an existing major fire.

In response to the challenging firefighting efforts, Greece has sought assistance from fellow European nations. Germany, Sweden, Croatia, Cyprus, Romania, France, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Albania, and Slovakia have collectively dispatched resources to aid in managing the wildfires.

Efforts to contain the fires are compounded by adverse weather conditions, including gale-force winds and scorching temperatures. These factors have fueled the rapid spread of flames, turning some fires into massive conflagrations that have consumed residences and extensive forested areas.

As investigations continue, authorities have taken a proactive stance by enforcing regulations aimed at preventing wildfires. These measures include restrictions on activities that could spark fires, such as the burning of dry vegetation and the use of outdoor barbecues. Since the commencement of this year's fire season, a notable number of individuals, totaling 163, have been arrested in connection with fire-related incidents. Among these arrests, 24 have been linked to deliberate acts of arson, while an additional 118 were attributed to negligence. Law enforcement has also played a role, making 18 arrests in support of these efforts.
