Northern California Hit By A Series Of Earthquakes Causing Minor Damage

The largest quake, with a magnitude of 5.5, hit the Sierra Nevada's Lake Almanor resort area on Thursday, followed by a 5.2 magnitude aftershock on Friday morning.

Northern California experienced a series of earthquakes this week, causing only minor damage. The US Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the Sierra Nevada's Lake Almanor resort region on Thursday at 4:19 pm, followed by a magnitude 5.2 aftershock at 3:18 am Friday.

Local businesses in the area, which is located 180 miles (290 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco, were seen cleaning up minor damage. The earthquake was felt as far as Sacramento, about 160 miles (260 kilometers) south.

According to Stephanie Hughes, a local restaurant manager, the earthquake caused a lot of broken glass, dishes, and liquor, and customers were seen fleeing onto the lawn.

The magnitude 5.5 earthquake was the largest in California since the magnitude 7.1 Ridgecrest sequence in 2019, according to former USGS seismologist Lucy Jones, who now runs a center that focuses on making communities more resilient to disasters.
