Pakistan Declares Day Of Mourning And Launches Crackdown On Human Smugglers After Greece Boat Tragedy

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared a day of mourning and ordered a swift crackdown on human smugglers following a tragic incident involving an overloaded boat off the coast of Greece. The ill-fated vessel, carrying approximately 750 individuals attempting to enter Europe illegally, sank in open seas, resulting in numerous casualties. While the exact number of Pakistani victims remains unknown, the Foreign Office (FO) has confirmed that at least 12 Pakistanis have been found alive as reported by PTI.

Expressing his deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims' families, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that June 19 would be observed as the "Day of Mourning" across the country. In a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), he directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast to honor the lives lost in the tragedy.

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wasted no time in demanding justice and accountability. He issued a strong directive to law enforcement agencies, urging them to intensify their efforts in tracking down the "agents" involved in human trafficking and ensuring they are brought to justice. The Prime Minister emphasized that no negligence or incompetence would be tolerated in this matter, calling for swift action and a comprehensive investigation.

To facilitate information regarding the deceased and injured, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) appointed senior police officer Alam Shinwari as the focal person. This dedicated point of contact will help gather information and assist the victims' families during this difficult time. Additionally, the chief secretary of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir appointed a focal person to liaise with the Pakistani embassy in Greece and authorities to support the injured and facilitate communication with the relatives of those who lost their lives.

Recognizing the urgent need to combat illegal migration networks, the FIA swiftly formed a specialized four-member team to track down and apprehend those responsible for organizing illegal journeys abroad. This concerted effort aims to dismantle these networks and prevent further tragedies from occurring.

The Greece boat tragedy has also sparked calls for immediate investigation from National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks young Pakistanis undertake in their quest for a better life in Europe. Some manage to reach their destination, inspiring others to follow suit, while others tragically lose their lives in pursuit of their dreams.
