An 85-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his 81-year-old wife to death following a dispute over pancakes on Sunday, according to federal prosecutors.
The man, identified as Steven Schwartz is accused of fatally stabbing his wife, Sharron Schwartz, at their house, as revealed by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia in a statement. Authorities claim that the incident occurred because Steven "did not want to eat the pancakes she made and stabbed her in the back."
However, the incident unfolded when police responded to a Northwest D.C. house after receiving a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers discovered 81-year-old Sharron Schwartz inside their apartment, suffering from stab wounds. Additionally, Steven Schwartz was found with "self-inflicted injuries."
Both victims were promptly transported to local hospitals for treatment, but unfortunately, Sharron Schwartz succumbed to her injuries.
Steven Schwartz has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, police said. He appeared before a judge via video on Thursday and entered a not-guilty plea. The judge determined probable cause for the murder and ordered Schwartz to be held without bond.
Meanwhile, his next hearing is scheduled for January 2. Further details are awaited.
