And this has also led to numerous and interesting fan theories surrounding the film
The highly-anticipated superhero movie from DC comics, 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,' is all set for release on December 20 this year. The trailer for the sequel dropped on Thursday, much to the excitement of the fanbase, who have been patiently waiting since the first instalment was released five years ago in 2018.
The trailer for the movie showed the character of Aquaman, Arthur Curry, played by Jason Momoa, sitting on his throne in Atlantis. The sequel will follow a storyline where Aquaman teams up with his half-brother, Orm (played by Patrick Wilson), against the pirate Black Manta, a character played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
As fans get ready to hit theatres in December, here are some interesting fan theories about what they can expect from the film:
Aquaman will rule over Atlantis as a tyrant
At the end of the first film, Arthur Curry rides on a mythical creature to battle his half-brother Orm and claim Atlantis. During this time, Curry follows a typical hero's journey, where he is still learning the ropes of how to be a king. However, once Curry gets the famed trident, he not only uses it to stop Orm and his army but also kills the brine soldiers, thus shedding a lot of blood in order to seize the kingdom. Hence, fans believe that Aquaman might just be a tyrant who will rule Atlantis in the sequel.
Black Manta is half-Atlantean
Fans have come up with the theory that the main villain in the second film, the pirate Black Manta, is half-Atlantean. This is because Manta was able to injure Aquaman during their fight using a weapon made of Atlantean steel, which was given to him by his father and passed down from his grandfather. As per the lore, Aquaman can only be wounded by a weapon made in Atlantis. It's believed that Manta's grandfather lived an isolated life in the ocean, and hence he could have mated with someone from an ocean-dwelling species, though not an Atlantean, which sparks more intrigue in this theory.
Atlan is not as good as Vulko said
Another fan theory suggests that Vulko (played by Willem Dafoe) might have lied to Aquaman about his father, Atlan, in order to showcase him in a positive light. This theory further believes that Atlan might have been a tyrant as well. Furthermore, it's believed that Atlantis did not prosper due to high-level technology and spirituality, but they engineered the flawless ocean-dwelling species by combining the DNA of humans and the Karathen (a powerful creature with traits of all the sea animals).
Apart from Momoa, Wilson, and Abdul-Mateen, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison, Willem Dafoe, and Dolph Lundgren will also come back to the silver screen by reprising their roles from the first film.
The film is also getting attention as it will be the first project in which Heard will be seen on screen after her defamation trial last year against her former husband, Johnny Depp.
