Cher Denied Emergency Bid To Gain Control Of Son's Money

Cher filed a petition last week seeking legal conservatorship over the finances of her 47-year-old son, citing concerns about his struggles with addiction and mental health.

In a court decision on Friday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jessica A. Uzcategui denied immediate approval of Cher's request for a legal conservatorship over her son, Elijah Blue Allman. The court, however, has scheduled a further hearing on the matter for January 29.

Cher, an Oscar- and Grammy-winning singer and actor, filed a petition last week, seeking control over the finances of her 47-year-old son, Elijah Blue Allman. She expressed concern about his struggles with addiction and mental health, stating that these challenges have made him incapable of managing his finances and pose a potential threat to his life.

Allman receives funds from a trust established by his late father, musician Gregg Allman. Cher's attorney, Gabrielle Vidal, argued during Friday's hearing that a pending payment from the trust makes the establishment of a conservatorship urgent, describing it as a "life-and-death proposition."

However, Judge Uzcategu said, “I am not persuaded.”

She cited Cher’s attorneys’ unwillingness to share material with Allman’s attorneys when contacted Thursday. Cher’s lawyers said they had confidentiality concerns and shared the documents instead with Allman’s court-appointed lawyer.

In a court filing before the hearing, Allman acknowledged his struggles with addiction and irresponsible spending but argued against the necessity of a conservatorship. He stated that he is currently under a doctor's care, has been sober for over three months, attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and is willing to undergo drug tests.

“While I understand that my mother, the proposed conservator, believes she is looking out for my best interests and I appreciate her love and support, I do not need her unsolicited help or support at this time,” the filing said.

Allman was in court Friday but spoke only to briefly answer the judge’s questions. His lawyers declined to comment after the hearing.

Cher did not attend. Her attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Further details are awaited.
