iOS 17 updates are free from Apple, all you need to know

Apple is gearing up for the global release of its highly anticipated iOS 17, marking the most significant update of 2023 for iPhones

Apple is gearing up for the global release of its highly anticipated iOS 17, marking the most significant update of 2023 for iPhones. This monumental update was initially introduced during Apple's iPhone 15 launch event on September 12, following its debut at WWDC in June. While the latest-generation iPhones, part of the iPhone 15 series, are already available for pre-order, they are set to hit retail stores on September 22. iOS 17 promises compatibility with the iPhone XS series and newer models, bringing a slew of exciting features to these devices.

Some standout additions include Live Voicemail, interactive widgets, Siri's enhanced functionality during phone calls, Standby Mode, Contact Posters, and more. To ensure you're well-prepared for the iOS 17 update, here's a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know.

When can you get the latest update?
Typically, downloads for iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS updates commence around 6 pm UK time, 1 pm in New York, and  3 am in Sydney. Apple distinguishes itself by allowing all eligible devices to download and install the update simultaneously, rather than in a staggered fashion, as observed with other manufacturers.

Devices compatible with iOS17
iOS 17 will be available for all Apple smartphones from 2018's iPhone XS and newer. iPadOS 17 extends its reach to all tablets starting from the 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 inches or the 2018 iPad (6th gen) and newer. For watchOS 10, compatibility starts with Apple Watches from 2018's Series 4 and newer.

Steps to acquiring the iOS17 update
To initiate the download, open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and navigate to General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap "Install" to begin the download and verification process, followed by a reboot to install. Alternatively, you can install the update through a Mac or via iTunes on a Windows computer.

For watchOS 10, ensure your iPhone is running iOS 17, and then access the Watch app on your phone. Navigate to General > Software Update to kickstart the installation process. Be prepared to place your smartwatch on its charger to complete the update.

Shocking! No charges at all
Apple offers these updates free of charge. If you encounter any requests for payment related to an update, exercise caution as it's likely a scam.

Key highlights of iOS 17:

Upgraded Keyboard Autocorrect: Apple's keyboard will now learn from your manual corrections, allowing you to avoid "ducking" typos. You can revert corrected text by tapping on the underlined words when autocorrect misses the mark. Additionally, the keyboard can predict and complete full sentences as you type, akin to features found in Gmail and other platforms.

Contact Posters, Video Messages, and Live Voicemail: Contact posters allow for personalized visuals when making calls, including your photo, text, and customizable colors. NameDrop simplifies contact sharing between iPhones or Apple Watches through proximity. In the US and Canada, the phone app can transcribe voicemail messages in real-time. FaceTime users can leave video voicemails and video calls can be made on TV via Apple TV.

Standby Mode and Offline Apple Maps: Standby mode transforms the iPhone into a smart display during charging, showing widgets, photos, and more. Siri can be invoked without saying "Hey Siri" each time. Apple Maps now supports saving areas for offline access, akin to Google Maps. Safari introduces profiles for organizing bookmarks, settings, and browsing data.

Check-In: A new safety feature that allows you to automatically share your location with friends or family. It detects when you arrive home and can send delayed status updates with location and battery information.

watchOS 10 Highlights:
