Labour Day 2023 in Canada: Toronto Police issues advisory for upcoming Labour Day long weekend

The Toronto Police Marine Unit, in view of increased water transport activity around Labour Day, has issued an advisory for the public. The advisory emphasizes the significance of water and boating safety as we approach the upcoming Labour Day long weekend.

In a news release issued on the morning of Friday, September 1, the police in a message to all residents enjoying lakes and beaches said "It is crucial to maintain a deep respect for the water and remain mindful of the potential risks involved."

The Labour Day long weekend extends until the holiday Monday on September 4.

The statement emphasized the potential seriousness of cold water immersion and stressed on the importance of wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device as the primary means of protection to prevent tragedy during water-related activities. Police stated that it is both a legal requirement to have life jackets and/or PFDs on board their vessels or crafts and a strong recommendation to wear them, as they are only effective when worn.

Police mentioned that considering the various activities like sailing, fishing, stand-up paddleboarding, kiteboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, and jet skiing happening in and around the waterfronts, it is essential to keep in mind that there is a collective responsibility for people to adhere to the laws and to share the lake.

The statement added that everyone has the right to a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. Additionally, it was emphasized that all watercraft are prohibited from designated swim areas along the Toronto beaches, which are clearly indicated and flagged using an internationally recognized system. Signs have also been erected in these areas to identify designated craft launch areas.
