Lionel Messi to Take the Field Against Toronto FC

Lionel Messi returns to Inter Miami CF's starting lineup for their crucial MLS clash against Toronto FC, following a brief absence due to muscular fatigue post-international duty. Despite uncertainties, Messi's presence aims to reignite Miami's playoff hopes after their first loss since his arrival. With seven games remaining, the team's focus remains on the upcoming U.S. Open Cup final, emphasizing the pursuit of a second-season trophy

Lionel Messi, the standout player for Inter Miami CF, is part of the starting lineup for their upcoming MLS match against Toronto FC on Wednesday. Messi was absent during Miami's recent 5-2 defeat against Atlanta due to muscular fatigue, which occurred after his return from international duty with the Argentine national team. However, he fully participated in Tuesday's practice.

Coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino did not confirm Messi's and Jordi Alba's participation in the game against the Canadian team in a statement released before Miami's Tuesday training session. Nevertheless, both Messi and Alba have been included in the starting lineup as Miami continues its pursuit of a playoff spot in the MLS Eastern Conference.

Messi’s Return To Starting Line Up
Messi had previously delivered a remarkable free-kick goal during Argentina's World Cup qualifying victory over Ecuador on September 7, but he didn't play in the match against Bolivia on September 12 before rejoining the Miami team.

The loss against Atlanta, for which Messi was unavailable, marked Miami's first defeat since Messi joined the club in July. Martino's team currently stands second-to-last in the Eastern Conference standings, trailing 9th-placed D.C. United, the last playoff spot holder, by seven points. There are seven games remaining in the regular season.

Miami defender DeAndre Yedlin expressed confidence in Messi's fitness, stating that he appeared ready to play and that having Messi on the team brings a sense of fear to opponents. Yedlin also highlighted Messi's vast experience and ability to control the pace of the game.

Following the match against Toronto, Miami will face in-state rival Orlando City SC on Sunday in an away game, and then they will compete against Houston in the U.S. Open Cup final on September 27. Martino mentioned that his team's rotations will prioritize the opportunity to win a second trophy of the season.

Miami's Playoff Push Amidst Title Temptations
Martino explained, "The final is just one game, and we're in it. It's very tempting to play for a title. Right now we have seven to eight MLS games left. And the reality is that it's not a guarantee we'll make the playoffs. It doesn't mean we won't go for it, but it's true that we're focused on the 27th."

Miami has already secured one trophy this season, winning the Leagues Cup last month. This victory earned them a place in next year's Concacaf Champions Cup and a bye in the opening round.
