Marlins' Johnny Cueto Placed on 15-Day IL Due to Viral Infection; Ryan Weathers Recalled

The Miami Marlins have placed Johnny Cueto on the 15-day injured list due to a viral infection. Left-hander Ryan Weathers has been recalled to fill the void as the team manages Cueto's condition

The Miami Marlins in  a significant roster adjustment have placed  right-hander Johnny Cueto on the 15-day injured list due to a viral infection. The move comes as the team aims to prioritize Cueto's health and recovery.

Left-hander Ryan Weathers has been recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to fill the void. Weathers made his return to the mound on Monday night, taking the start against the San Diego Padres.

Cueto's placement on the injured list is retroactive to Friday, indicating that the Marlins are looking to manage his condition effectively. This decision follows Cueto's earlier stint on the 60-day injured list due to right biceps tightness earlier in the season.

Throughout the 2023 season, Cueto, 37, has been a part of the Marlins' pitching rotation, making seven appearances, including six starts. Unfortunately, he has faced challenges on the field, maintaining a record of 0-3 with an ERA of 5.57.

In contrast, Ryan Weathers, who  was acquired from the Padres on August 1 as part of a trade deal, has shown his potential as a contributor. This season, he has been involved in 14 appearances, primarily as a starter, with a record of 1-8 and an ERA of 7.32.

Weathers' return to the mound on Monday against the Padres brought mixed results. Despite his efforts, he was unable to secure the win, allowing five runs on five hits in 3⅓ innings. The Marlins ultimately faced a 6-2 defeat against the Padres.
