The Georgia prosecutor handling former U.S. President Donald Trump's case has accused Republican Congressman Jim Jordan of meddling in a state criminal matter. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday
Fani Willis, the district attorney for Georgia's Fulton County, made this allegation through a letter addressed to Representative Jim Jordan. Jordan, a staunch ally of Donald Trump and the head of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee has been under scrutiny for his involvement in the case.
Trump himself was indicted in Georgia just last month on various charges, including an alleged conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The controversy unfolded when Jordan initiated an official probe, marked by an August 24 letter to Willis. In this letter, he questioned the motives behind the prosecution, requested documentation regarding the use of federal funds within her office, and sought clarification regarding any potential coordination with the U.S. Justice Department.
Willis, responding to these accusations, penned a letter which was subsequently published on the newspaper's website. In her response, she firmly rejected claims of political bias in the prosecution, deeming them "unfounded." She further emphasized that U.S. constitutional law grants her the authority to disregard Jordan's inquiries, stating unequivocally, "(There) is no justification in the Constitution for Congress to interfere with a state criminal matter."
Up to the time of reporting, neither Representative Jordan nor District Attorney Willis had issued official statements in response to these allegations.
It's noteworthy that Donald Trump, aged 77, is currently facing criminal charges in four separate cases this year, two of which were initiated by U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith.
