Selena Gomez shines at MTV VMAs 2023, takes home Best Afrobeats Award

Selena Gomez and the rapper Rema had an amazing night at the MTV Video Music Awards 2023, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The 31-year-old singer-actor and the 23-year-old rapper were nominated for Best Duet, Song of the Year, and Best Afrobeats for their duet "Calm Down."

This was Rema's first VMAs win, Selena's second, and her first in 10 years. Selena's most recent VMA nomination was for her debut solo single "Come & Get It" in 2013.

Selena was seen resting her head on Rema's shoulder at one point during the show She ran into BFF Taylor Swift, who screamed loudly for her win, and she was even sitting next to another former Disney Channel star - Sofia Carson.

The song "Calm Down" went viral after Rema and Selena Gomez collaborated on it, and it was well received by the world.  The beats and style of the song make it a terrific listen, and it's definitely one to put on repeat. The duo's song received the Best Afrobeats award at the VMAs, which was presented by Tiffany Haddish.

Selena Gomez came on the red carpet wearing a colorful red ensemble. In honor of this year's MTV VMAs, the singer and actress wore an Oscar de la Renta red floral thread work dress with a semi-sheer look. The hemline of the dress was asymmetrical, producing a thigh-high slit.
Jimmy Choo's strappy red sandals complemented the dress. She wore Pasquale Bruni jewelry, which included earrings, rings, and bracelets.

Gomez became a big topic of internet discussion in August when she released the music video for her new single "Single Soon." The song was written in tribute to the popular "Sex and the City" television series.

MTV's Video Music Awards have honored the year's biggest musicians since 1984. Nicki Minaj hosts the 40th VMAs, which take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and include a brand new category: Show of the Summer. Shakira was honored with the Video Vanguard Award, while P Diddy honored with the Global Icon Award. Taylor Swift swept the VMAs, taking home nine awards, including Video and Song of the Year for "Anti-Hero." According to MTV, she currently has the second most total wins.
