The quake, which was initially reported at a magnitude of 6.5, was centred 138 miles (222 km) northwest of Saumlaki in the Tanimbar Islands. A tsunami alert has been issued, the USGS added.
As of now, no casualties or loss of property has been reported.
Indonesia has been rattled by earthquakes in the past.
The country is located in the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, which is vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
