There are several factors supporting this prognosis. One, China will remain a major challenge for the US: it will either seek its rightful place in the existing order, on par with the US, or, in face of US resistance, it will seek to overturn it. China has clearly moved beyond its economic agenda; it recognises that, in the words of distinguished West Asia commentator Ramzy Baroud, that “to sustain its economic growth unhindered, it has to develop the necessary tools to protect itself, its allies, and their combined interests”.
