Arunachal Pradesh Girl Leaves Home To Get Job Through Facebook Friend In Delhi, Goes Missing

A girl, identified as Jenti Bellai, from Arunachal Pradesh has reportedly gone missing after reaching New Delhi to meet a man, who had befriended her on social networking site Facebook.

The Indian Express reported that Bellai, a resident of Tezu in Lohit district, had left for the national capital without informing her parents. The man, identified as Ahtar Hassan, allegedly promised her a job in Delhi.

Since November 28, Bellai’s parents and friends have not been able to establish contact with her. Bellai’s parents are also worried because the girl’s mobile phone is switched off and her Facebook profile is inactive. The police have started investigation into the matter after her parents filed a missing complaint.

The crime branch (missing person) unit in Delhi has been alerted.

The police sources said the missing girl might be held against her will.

Despite advisory being issued from time to time by law enforcement agencies on cyber crimes and preventive steps to check online fraud cases, there are still many fraud or cheating cases being reported from different parts of the country.

The report comes as the National Crime Records Bureau released its latest data on Thursday that showed National Capital Delhi recorded the highest cases of crimes against women in 2016 among metropolitan cities, with a crime rate of 182.1 crimes per one lakh population.

Among states, Delhi has been ranked first, with 160.4 crimes against a population of one lakh women, followed by Assam (131.3 crimes) and Odisha (84.5). Uttar Pradesh recorded 14.5% of the cases of crimes committed against women, followed by West Bengal at 9.6%.
