Rajasthan Congress in-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa came under fire from the BJP government over his recent controversial remarks on the Pulwama terror attack of 2019.
Singh was addressing a crowd on Monday when the Congress took out a protest against the BJP over the lack of any action against Adani following the Hindenburg reports. "If Adani and Ambani have to be removed, Modi should be finished first...then defeat the BJP," he said.
Taking to a tweet, he wrote in Hindi, "After coming to power, Modi ji has always taken decisions to benefit his business friends leaving the interests of the country. Because of which Modi ji sold the whole country to his friends and the common people are suffering as a result. We strongly condemn it."
However, during his address, the Congress leader also raked the issue of the 2019 Pulwama attack, which killed 40 soldiers months before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, saying, "Till date, it is not known how the jawans were martyred."
According to media reports, he further said, "How did Pulwama happen? Hold an inquiry. Did he do this to contest the election?" Mr Randhawa said. They say that there is no bigger patriot than them. Modi doesn't know meaning of 'deshbhakti'. Which leader of BJP fought for the freedom of India?"
Singh also urged the party to end infighting ahead of the state assembly elections which is scheduled at the end of this year.
"I am urging all leaders -- finish fighting among yourselves and think of finishing Modi," he had said in the address on Monday. If we can finish Modi, Hindustan might survive. If Modi is here, then Hindustan will be finished," he said.
Singh's controversial remarks drew sharp reactions from the saffron party.
Reacting to the Congress leader’s remarks, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla said, “Once again, Congress crosses all limits - like Raja Pateria incites people to finish Modi and gives clean chit to Pakistan on Pulwama.”
State BJP chief Satish Poonia retaliated and said that Singh "has insulted martyrdom in the country, has insulted the dignity of the post of Honorable Prime Minister, the whole country has been humiliated." He further added, "He, Sonia Gandhi ji and Rahul Gandhi ji should apologize to the country."
