Incessant rains have been lashing Mumbai since Monday, causing severe disruption to the residents' day-to-day lives. In view of the heavy downpour, the India Meteorological Department issued a high tide alert in the island city.
An Indian-origin Singaporean bar owner was sentenced to jail for 13 years and four weeks on Monday and will receive nine strokes of the cane for raping a runaway 17-year-old girl after allowing her to work for him.
The 42-year-old Raj Kumar Bala, was convicted of a charge each of raping and molesting the victim, pleading guilt to a third charge of harbouring a runaway under the Children and Young Persons Act.
In view of the heavy rain forecast in Mumbai, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, all exams scheduled for Tuesday at the University of Mumbai have been postponed. The university said that new dates will be announced soon.
Security forces are undertaking search operation in the Machedi area of Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district.
This comes a day after an Indian Army convoy was attacked by terrorists in the Machedi area, killing five soldiers.

Russia will discharge and facilitate the return of all Indians working in the Russian Army after Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the matter with President Vladimir Putin, news agency ANI reported citing sources.
The special investigation team (SIT) has submitted its report in the Hathras stampede case to the government. "The report said that the committee organising the 'satsang' was responsible for calling more people than the permitted number, not making adequate arrangements and not inspecting the spot," news agency ANI reported citing sources.
Speaking about the flood situation in Assam, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria said, "A flood-like situation more or less persists in Assam every year... People are always prepared for this situation because the region is always prone to floods owing to the Brahmaputra and other smaller rivers. This time there have been more casualties and more area has been affected... People cooperate with the authorities and support the efforts of the administration in dealing with such situations..."
In the early hours of Tuesday, two men were shot at in Delhi's Seelampur area. Police said that 19-year-old Umar and 35-year-old Waseem were sitting in a park when they were attacked by two assailants at around 1:40 am.
The duo sustained bullet injuries in their legs and were taken to a hospital, an official said.
At least five people were killed and three others injured on Tuesday after a collision between a car and an auto-rickshaw took place in Bihar's Begusarai district, police said.
The accident took place near Ratan Chowk in Begusarai town under the jurisdiction of the FCI Police Station when the car collided head-on with the three-wheeler early this morning, a police statement said.

Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested seven persons including a doctor in connection with an organ transplant racket.
"7 people have been arrested in connection with an international organ transplant racket. The mastermind of this racket was a Bangladeshi. Both, donor and receiver were from Bangladesh. We have arrested a person named Russell, who used to arrange patients and donors and the lady doctor involved in the transplant has also been arrested. Further investigation is underway," said Amit Goel, DCP Crime Branch.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has ordered the listing of plea seeking probe into Hathras stampede.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Russia, addressed the Indian community in Moscow.
"I want to thank all of you for coming here. I have not come here alone, I have come with a lot of things. I have brought with me the fragrance of the soil of India. I have brought with me the love of 140 crore countrymen," he said.
"This is my first conversation with the Indian diaspora after forming the govt for the third time," PM Modi said in his address to the Indian community in Moscow.
"Today, on 9th July and it has been a full month since I took oath as the PM of India for the third time and I took a vow that I will work with 3 times more strength, at 3 times more speed and it is also a coincidence that the number 3 is also present in many of the government's goals. The government's goal is to make India the third largest economy in the world in the third term," he added.
PM Modi said, "In the third phase, the government's target is to create 3 crore houses for the poor, to create 3 crore 'Lakhpati Didi'. We want to empower the women self-help groups running in villages in India, we want in my third phase, 3 crore women from among the poor women of villages become 'Lakhpati Didi', that is, their annual income should be more than Rs 1 lakh."
PM Modi said, "Today's India makes sure it achieves the target it sets. Today, India is the country that takes Chandrayaan to the part of the moon where no other country in the world could reach. Today, India is the country that is giving the most reliable model of digital transactions to the world."
"Today, India is a country that has the third largest startup ecosystem in the world. When you people gave me the opportunity to serve the country for the first time in 2014, there were hundreds of startups, today there are lakhs of startups. Today, India is a country that is filing patents and publishing research papers in record numbers," he added.
PM Modi in Moscow said, "The world is surprised to see the pace of development that the country has achieved in the last 10 years. When people from the world come to India, they say 'Bharat badal raha hai'. They are clearly able to see the transformation of India, the reconstruction of India."
"When India organises successful events like G20, the world speaks in one voice, 'Bharat badal raha hai'. The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed a public interest litigation over the alleged molestation of a boy by the Dalai Lama, as claimed to have been shown in a video clip that went viral last year, saying the religious leader was “being playful” and has already apologised for the incident.
In the clip, the Dalai Lama was seen kissing the boy on the lips and asking him to “suck his tongue”, which sparked a row on social media.
Mihir Shah, the 24-year-old son of a Shiv Sena leader against who Mumbai Police had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC), has been arrested in connection with an accident in which a BMW allegedly being driven by him fatally knocked down a woman in Worli area of the city in the early hours of Sunday, July 8.
Kaveri Nakhwa (45), resident of Worli Koliwada, was going with her husband Pradeep on the arterial Dr Annie Besant Road when the luxury car, allegedly driven by Mihir Shah, crashed it into the couple's two-wheeler at around 5.30 am on Sunday, according to the police.

"As a friend, I have always said that for the bright future of our coming generations, peace is of utmost importance. But I also know that solutions are not possible on battlegrounds. Amid bombs, guns and bullets, solutions and peace talks do not succeed. We will have to follow the path to peace only through talks," PM Modi told Putin.

Encounter breaks out between terrorists, security forces in remote forest area in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir
Ministry of Home Affairs today extended the ban on the terrorist group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) declaring it again as an unlawful association for a further period of five years from July 10, 2024.
Six persons were killed on Tuesday in separate incidents in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi and Sultanpur districts, police said. In Hardoi, four persons were killed and six others injured in the Madhoganj area when a bus lost control and overturned on a hut, police officials cited in a news agency PTI report said.
The incident took place in the morning killing Nankhi (62), Ayesha (45), Hasana Raja (75) and Sufiyan (25), while six others were injured.
In another incident in Sultanpur, two brothers -- Shivank (6) and Shivang (8) -- were killed when a truck hit the motorcycle on which they were travelling with their father Pappu Nishad and mother Aarti, police said.
The parents were injured in the incident.
Held productive discussions with President Putin at the Kremlin today, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Russia currently, in a post on microblogging platform X.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will assist the Jammu and Kashmir police in its probe into a terrorist attack on an Army convoy in Kathua that left five personnel dead and as many injured, officials said on Tuesday.
A team of National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials has been sent to Kathua in Jammu region to extend all possible support to the police in its investigation, they said and made it clear that the probe agency has not registered a case to investigate the terrorist attack.
Five Army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed, and as many were injured when a group of heavily armed terrorists ambushed a patrolling party on the rugged Machedi-Kindli-Malhar mountainous road near the Badnota village in Lohai Malhar, approximately 150 km from the Kathua district's headquarters.
