BSF Contingent Set To Deploy In Manipur's Thawai Kuki Village After Fatal Assault

Amid escalating tensions and a recent spate of violence, security dynamics in Manipur are poised for a shift as a Border Security Force (BSF) contingent is reportedly slated for deployment in Thawai Kuki village, located in the Ukhrul district. This move follows a tragic incident where three individuals fell victim to armed assailants on Friday. Security personnel have initiated extensive combing operations in the neighboring hill jungles, where the armed perpetrators are believed to be concealing themselves.

The decision to introduce a BSF team to the village gains significance in the wake of Chief Minister N Biren Singh's demand for reports from the Churachandpur deputy commissioner and SP regarding a disturbing episode. During an Independence Day parade, a group openly displayed sophisticated firearms, prompting heightened concerns about the region's security landscape., according to PTI reports.

Sources reveal a broader plan to reinforce security across Manipur, with approximately 60 companies of the BSF anticipated to be stationed in nine districts. This measure aims to bolster the administration's efforts in maintaining law and order, as the state grapples with mounting challenges.

Informed about the prevailing security environment, BSF (EC) ADG Sonali Mishra and four senior officers recently conferred with Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan. The briefing provided a comprehensive overview of the security situation prevailing in the northeastern state, offering insights into the complexities that demand attention.

Meanwhile, the human toll of ethnic clashes continues to leave its mark. Over 200 Meiteis, who had sought refuge across the border in Myanmar to escape the ethnic violence ravaging Manipur, have returned after more than three months. The Army and civil administration united in providing essential sustenance and medical aid to these displaced individuals.

The ongoing ethnic strife between Meiteis and Kukis has exacted a grim toll, with over 160 lives lost and hundreds more injured since the outset of the clashes on May 3.
