The cyclone, which made landfall near Andhra's Bapatla on December 5, wrecked havoc in Tamil Nadu, leaving several localities in Chennai like Velachery and Tambaram completely indundated. On Wednesday too, people were seen leaving their homes in the areas surrounded with water to safer zones, carrying their children and wading through the stagnant water. They called for help, including pressing more boats to ferry people to higher ground.
At least 12 people were killed in rain-related incidents in Chennai as Michaung made its way to Andhra Pradesh from Tamil Nadu. As of Wednesday, three days after the storm passed Chennai, many residents were still stuck in their homes without power, drinking water and milk. Power supply had not resumed in parts of the city including Kilpauk and Kattupakkam.
In Velachery, three workers remain trapped for over two days in a 60-feet trench that was dug up for construction of a building on Five Furlong Road. A portion of the land caved in following heavy rains on December 4, trapping the workers. According to a report by TheNewsMinute, till the evening of December 5, just one water motor was deployed to pump out the water from the crater.
The Tamil Nadu government meanwhile said power was kept suspended in some areas as a "preventive measure" as the cables were under water, while asserting all efforts were being taken to restore normalcy. Chief Minister M K Stalin has written to the Centre seeking an interim flood relief of Rs 5,060 crore to tide over the situation.
