The opposition party has been attacking the BJP after the US-based short seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, against the Adani Group
The Congress party staged a nationwide protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government over the Adani Hindenburg row. The party workers held protests in Bhopal, Chandigarh, Jammu, Lucknow, Bhararisain, and Chennai and some of them were detained as well.
The party has been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the allegations against Adani Group. In Assam, top Congress leaders, including state president and MLAs, were detained during a ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ programme by the party.
“We were not allowed to take out our march towards the Raj Bhawan. Police prevented us from leaving the assembly site,” Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar, who was present at the protest site, said.
“We were arrested and taken to Latasil Police Station. We were later allowed to leave on PR bond,” he added.
In Jammu as well, Congress activists, including Pradesh Congress Committee president Vikar Rasool Wani, were detained after they tried to take out a march to the Raj Bhavan over the Adani issue and alleged anti-people policies of the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
“We are assembled here to take out a march to the Raj Bhavan to lodge our protest against the BJP for denying a probe into allegations of financial irregularities and market manipulation by the Adani group. The 'Modi-Adani friendship' has destroyed this country,” Wani said before leading the protest march from outside the Maharaja Hari Singh Park in the city.
In Punjab, police used a water cannon against Congress leaders and workers when they tried to force their way through barricades to 'gherao' the residence of the governor. The protest was led by Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
He slammed the BJP government at the Centre and accused it of “benefitting a few” big industrialists and also charged it with promoting “crony capitalism.” He further alleged that the BJP-led government was misusing the central agencies against political rivals who raise voice against it.
