CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran has passed away at the age of 73. The Communist Party of India leader died of a cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Kerala’s Kochi where he had been admitted for over a month.

CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran has passed away at the age of 73. The Communist Party of India leader died of a cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Kerala’s Kochi where he had been admitted for over a month.
He was being treated for ailments including diabetes and an unhealed wound on his leg which led to it being amputated. It is believed that he was on his path to recovery when he suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this evening.
He had taken a three-month leave from the party on medical grounds and had been absent from the political scene lately.
Born in 1950 at Koottickal in Kottayam, Rajendran began his political career at a young age when he joined the youth wing of CPI, All India Youth Front (AIYF). At the age of 19 he became the AIYF secretary and two years later joined CPI.
In 1978, Rajendran was chosen for the CPI state secretariat and in 2006 he became the AITUC state general secretary. By 2012, he joined the national executive, and in 2015, he took on the role of the CPI state secretary.
