Earthquake Of Magnitude 6.1 Hits Afghanistan, Tremors Felt In Delhi-NCR

Tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR of a Magnitude 6.1 earthquake that hit Afghanistan at around 2:50 pm on Tuesday.

An earthquake of Magnitude 6.1 hit Afghanistan on Thursday, tremors of which were felt across Delhi, Noida and other parts of NCR. As per the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake hit Afghanistan's struck the Hindu Kush region at 2:50 pm.

"Earthquake of Magnitude:6.1, Occurred on 11-01-2024, 14:50:24 IST, Lat: 36.48 & Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km ,Location:  Afghanistan," National Center for Seismology said in a post on X. 

As per earthquake.usgs.gov, the earthquake that hit Afghanistan was of Magnitude 6.4.

No reports of damage were immediately available. Pakistan media reported that strong tremors were also felt in country's Lahore, Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cities.

Two earthquakes jolted Afghanistan within 30 minutes last week as well. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 4.4 and occurred at 12:28 am 100 km east of Fayzabad on January 3, according to the National Center for Seismology. The second quake, with a magnitude of 4.8, struck at 12:55 am, 126 km east of Fayzabad.

In October last year, a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake followed by strong aftershocks killed hundreds of people in western Afghanistan. Months later, another quake hit the country on December 12.

Afghanistan falls on multiple fault lines in an area where tectonic plates collide often, leading to significant tectonic activity.
