Sharmita Kar writes, the Congress was walking a tightrope throughout the campaign due to an apparent tussle between Bhupinder Singh Hooda–a Jat leader–and Selja Kumari, the party's most prominent Dalit face, with the latter evidently in the sidelines.
The apparent infighting within the Congress came to the fore during the selection of candidates. Of the 90 seats in Haryana, 72 seats have Congress candidates from the Hooda camp. This went against the party's own campaign for inclusivity across communities and particularly impacted the Dalit vote base it sought to regain.
Selja, a general secretary of the Congress, who has a major influence in the Assembly constituencies in Sirsa and Fatehabad districts of Haryana, did not attend the launch of the party's manifesto and stayed out of the campaigning for the most part. She was reportedly upset over the ticket distribution as she had requested tickets in 30 seats but got only nine, and was unable to convince the party leadership to nominate her close aide Ajay Chaudhary from the Narnaund seat.
The Jat-Dalit consolidation, which was the Congress’ trump card, may not have delivered due to dissatisfaction of the the Dalit vote base with the direction taken by the party’s leadership. The Jat community constitutes about 27 per cent of the state’s population, whereas the Scheduled Castes (SC) constitute around 20 per cent of the population. Dalits in Haryana, particularly the Chamar community, historically sided with the Congress but turned to BJP in the last decade.
Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Dr. Krishan Lal Middha from the Jin seat in Haryana has won with 68,920 votes with a margin of 15,860 votes.
Meanwhile, Mahavir Gupta from the Indian National Congress lost with 53,060 votes and Pradeep Singh, an Independent candidate, also lost with 7,639 votes.
Congress candidate Aftab Ahmed has won Nuh seat in Haryana Assembly with 91,833 votes and a margin of 46,963 votes.
Meanwhile, Tahir Hussain from the Indian National Lok Dal lost with 44,870 votesand Sanjay Singh from the Bharatiya Janata Party also lost with 15,902 votes.
Congress leader and former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was ahead in the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi seat with 71,753 votes after ten rounds of counting. His closest competitor, Manju from the ruling BJP, was behind by 52,341 votes.
Hooda, who is seen as a possible candidate for chief minister, stated that the decision about the chief minister position will be made by the party's leaders.
The Congress party raised concerns about the counting data being uploaded on the Election Commission's website after the BJP quickly pulled ahead of them in the early results of the Haryana Assembly elections on Tuesday.
Congress General Secretary and communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh in a post on X wrote, "Like the Lok Sabha elections, in Haryana we are again witnessing slowing down of uploading up-to-date trends on the ECI website. Is the BJP trying to build pressure on the administration by sharing outdated and misleading trends."
Ramesh further complained to Election Commission, calling it "inordinate and unacceptable delay in updating trends" in the Haryana Assembly election results.
Ramesh asked the poll watchdog to issue directions to update website with accurate figures to counter the malicious narratives.
