The candidates were dispatched from the Army Recruiting Office in Srinagar to about 30 training centres of various regiments of the Indian Army on December 24.
The first-ever batch of government-sponsored Agniveers selected from Jammu and Kashmir joined the Indian Army on Tuesday for the training programme.
After a rigorous physical test, medical tests, and written examination, a batch of 200 Agniveers were selected following document verifications.
The candidates were dispatched from the Army Recruiting Office in Srinagar to about 30 training centres of various regiments of the Indian Army on December 24. The candidates will report for training between December 25 to 30, and their training shall commence with effect from January 1, 2023.
"The selection and despatch of candidates through all stages has been possible due to the concerted and synergised efforts of the civil administration helmed by Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir and his team, constant support of Chinar Corps and the dedication of the aspirants to contribute to nation building," a media release said.
This comes almost after two months when on October 7, hundreds of enthusiastic youngsters, mostly from Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, thronged the Army Agniveer recruitment rally.
The rally, which was organised by Army Recruiting Office, Jammu, at Jorawar Stadium, Sunjuwan, continued till October 22.
Jammu-based Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lt Col Devender Anand said the rally was being conducted for the aspiring youth from 10 districts of Jammu province - Samba, Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar.
The Agnipath scheme was unveiled on June 14 for the recruitment of youths in the armed forces.
Youth between 17-and-a-half and 21 years of age are eligible to apply, and they would be inducted for a four-year tenure. The scheme allows 25 per cent of them to be granted regular service subsequently. After the scheme was unveiled, protests erupted in several states against the scheme.
Later, this year, the government extended the upper age limit to 23 years for recruitment.
