Maharashtra's former health minister Deepak Sawant suffered severe back and neck injuries after his car was hit by a dumper truck on the Mumbai-Ghodbunder Highway on Friday.

The incident took place near Sagnai Naka in Kashimira when a rashly driven dumper rammed into Sawant’s car from behind at around 11:30 am. The dumper driver, identified as Irshad Khand, was held by Kashimira Police and taken into custody.
Traffic police immediately arranged an ambulance and made arrangements to get Sawant admitted to a hospital. However, the former minister preferred to receive treatment at Criti-Care Hospital in Andheri, a senior officer attached to the Kashimira police station informed reporters.
Sawant was on his way to visit Sawarde village in Mokhada tehsil of Palghar district where two infants had recently died due to malnutrition within a gap of two weeks.
The rear part of his car has been reportedly completely damaged and investigation is underway.
